School.

Sat Nov 14, 2009, 12:18 AM
Recently I had a meeting with my photo department head, Barbara Degenevieve. You can check her out on wikipedia. The rush you get when an artist of that stature tells you that you have good work is in no way explainable.
Today I uploaded a project from school for the first time that was well received. I asked people what they thought happened to them when they die, had them write it down, and took their photo. Enjoy.
Cole.

I can't seem to get a straight answer out of the SAIC website.

What courses are required by photo majors? Are there academics? art history?

Can you double major?
Do they have Graphic Design? (what do they call it, because I can't find it under "graphic design") --

thank you!!

Okay, the first thing that you have to know is that there are no "majors" really. We all have the same major, which is Bachelor of Fine Arts. However you have an "area of concentration", which is the area of art that you are most interested in, and what you will be spending most of your time in. This may sound weird, and it is, but its actually great, because this means that you are allowed to explore all areas of art! Like even though I am a photo guy, I am taking a painting class, and a sound production class, and a video class. You can't do this anywhere else. And yes, you do have normal classes that are required like art histories, english and liberal arts, etc. They are quite difficult and taken very seriously, and there are such a wide variety of things to take, like you won't take "art history", but you could take a class on comedy films of the 20th century, or I'm in an Anti-Semitism class, etc. So about your question on double majoring, the degree at SAIC is essentially a double major, or even triple major already! And we don't have a concentration for graphic design, because thats geared more towards marketability and technical work, remember SAIC is fine art ONLY. If you want to do something like graphic design, another school would be a better choice, but if you want to make art, then SAIC is the ONLY way to go. Its a hard decision, I know. Keep in mind that SAIC is a conceptual school, and most other art schools are technical, and teach you with marketing in mind, ie, how can we MAKE MONEY, and what is good and bad about your work. For example, if you apply to RISD, which you should, you will be REQUIRED to do a drawing test. This is because they emphasize the technical side, so being able to draw is essential. At SAIC, that doesn't matter, because the IDEAS are more important than the execution.
Is this making any sense?

Oh, and I don't want to seem like I'm advertising my school, but I do love it. Here is a list of important art schools that you should research and apply to.
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Rhode Island School of Design
Maryland Institute College of Art
Calafornia Institute of the Arts
California College of the Arts
Pratt Institute
School of Visual Arts
Minneapolis College of Art and Design
Savannah College of Art and Design

Oh hey, also I was wondering if you knew what Creative Commons was all about. Because I used it for a while and then found out that it takes away from of your rights to the photograph.

Like, I believe it would give me the right to print your photographs and distribute them non-profit, ect.

Try this link for example, it explains more about it: [link]

So if your intent is to make sure people know not to "mess with yo shit" then it'd be best to write something like "©2009 Cole Kelley. All rights reserved." with every picture and scrap the CC.

I really don't know anything about law. I am so the wrong person to ask about this. I'm not...really worried about people jacking my shit, so I haven't given too much thought into it. If you are really worried about, you can always watermark your work. While aesthetically displeasing, it keeps your work safe. By the way, if you plan on applying to SAIC this year, let me know before you submit your portfolio, because I can help you choose the ones that they will most like.
